Makerspace equipment booking with training requirements

Avio lets university makerspaces and fab labs lend tools, schedule machine time, and make sure only trained students use the equipment that needs it.

Training before access

A student who has not finished the laser cutter orientation cannot book the laser cutter. Each tool or machine carries its own requirements, and they are enforced on the server whenever a booking is created or changed.

  • Training recorded by shop staff or instructors, or self-certified for low-risk tools
  • Rules combine training with course enrollment, department, and group
  • Students see why an item is unavailable to them

Tools that leave the shop, machines that stay

Hand tools, drills, and electronics kits are checked out and returned like any equipment. Machines that stay in place, such as 3D printers or a CNC router, can be set up as bookable spaces with time windows.

  • Checkout and return with barcode scanning
  • Time-window bookings checked against open hours and existing bookings
  • Staff confirm or reject each request

Upkeep and records

When a machine needs repair, staff open a ticket on that unit and assign it. Every booking, checkout, and return is recorded with who made it and when.

  • Damage and maintenance tickets with severity and assignment
  • Full audit log filterable by period and category
  • Usage by term to justify new equipment and staff hours
